For the first Scots Whay Hae! podcast of 2021 Ali spoke to writer David F. Ross about his latest novel There’s Only One Danny Garvey (out now, published by Orenda Books). It’s a brilliant book which explores themes of mental health, guilt, family, friendship, football, and so much more.
The two desperately try to avoid all spoilers as they talk about the inspiration behind the book, and Danny himself, as well as the setting of Scottish junior football, how David’s novels have progressed over the years, his different approach to writing this time around, and the importance of music and mixtapes to both character and plot.
They also discuss how much they’re missing live events, other sport related books which are not really about sport, the role played by lower league football in many communities (and the selfless characters who are vital to their survival), as well as some stories which didn’t make the final cut. It’s always a pleasure to catch up with David, and we think this podcast kicks off our new year in fine style.
