For the latest SWH! Podcast Ali spoke to writer Ryan O'Connor about his debut novel The Voids (published by Scribe Publications).
Ryan talks about the autobiographical nature of The Voids, why he set it in Glasgow, but also the reasons it could have been set elsewhere, the influences on his work - both literary and other - the fine judgment required in introducing humour to dark tales, the difficulty in deciding what to leave out, and what to leave in, and so much more.
The two also discuss Ryan's long journey to being published, the often overlooked importance of brief encounters, finding places, and people, to whom you feel connected to, and why his novel avoids offering easy answers.
The Voids is one of the most exciting debut novels in years, one which tells stories about people and places still too rarely found in literature, and it was a pleasure to be able to discuss the book and the reason behind it with the writer himself.
The Voids is out now, published by Scribe Publications
Ryan O'Connor will be appearing at Edinburgh's Golden Hare Books on 20th April. Click here for tickets and further information.
